West Virginia University Hospitals is an approved provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the West Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. (#PO05-11) WVUH is also an approved provider by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses (#WV1996-0039.RN)
The Nursing Education Department offers a variety of educational offerings that provide nursing continuing education free of charge to the nursing staff at WVUH. If you still have questions about what we do, check out our FAQ page for more information.
Nursing Service Orientation (NSO) is the hospital’s orientation for all new nursing service employees hired to West Virginia University Hospitals. NSO is offered an average of two times a month except for high volume times during the year such as January and June. NSO is a general overview of Nursing Services, Policy and Procedures, Infection Control, CORE Initiative, The Joint Commission requirements & National Patient Safety goals and Medication Safety. Individuals are given the opportunity to be validated on point of care testing and medication calculations. Attendance at Nursing Service Orientation is required for all new nursing service employees during the first week of employment with West Virginia University Hospitals.
WVUH Nursing Education Team works to provide structure, support and consistency regarding house-wide issues and opportunities.
This team accomplishes this through:
- Anticipating, analyzing and responding to divisional and departmental educational needs.
- Reviewing and maintaining current cross-divisional educational competencies with consistent criteria for successful completion.
- Reviewing and making recommendations on educational policy and procedure development.
- Providing the guidelines for maintenance of unit specific competencies.
- Promoting, approving and following through with Nursing Fellowships to further nursing practice at WVUH.
Team membership consists of the nurse educators from CEOD, the Clinical Preceptors, and lead nurses representing all nursing departments. New competency and education requests should be submitted to our team. This team meets monthly.

American Heart Association courses are offered on a regular basis. BLS is offered on a weekly basis. ACLS and PALS are offered monthly. The PEARS course is offered on a quarterly schedule. These classes are all administered according to AHA standards and following the most current ECC Science Guidelines. Some courses require the completion of pre-work prior to attending. Completion of all course activities is required in order to receive contact hours.

The Clinical Associate Development Course is a three week program held annually. The program prepares candidates who have no direct health care experience for the fulfilling role of a Clinical Associate here at West Virginia University Hospitals. This class does not entitle the individual for certification as a nursing assistant. The class includes lecture and hands on clinical experience with real patients. Topics discussed during the duration of the class include: Patient Safety, Professionalism, Anatomy & Physiology of all the major body systems, Vital Signs, and Care of the Patient. Interested individuals need to contact Human Resources for application and further information.
The Clinical Associate Orientation Program was developed in January 2007 in hopes of better preparing the newly hired Clinical Associate for their role here at WVUH. The orientation program is offered twice a month and is approximately 6-8 hours in length (depending on number of students and previous experience). Topics covered in this interactive orientation program include: Patient Safety & Restraints, Professionalism, Vital Signs, Documentation, Care of the Patient and Overall Duties of the Clinical Associate. Only newly hired Clinical Associates are enrolled in the orientation program.
